with the Black Baton

The Holbeach Town Band and Holbeach Victoria Training Band are extremely pleased to have taken part in Brass The Baton, the only London 2012 Cultural Olympiad project designed specifically for Brass Bands.

Holbeach Town Band used the Black Baton when they played for the lighting of the Jubilee Beacon at Holbach on Monday 4th June. Holbeach Victoria Training Band also used the Black Baton when they played as the Olympic Torch passed through Holbeach on 4th July.

On both occasions Terry Luddington, the national organiser of the Baton Relay, came to bring the baton to the Band. He stayed to hear the Senior Band's performance at the Beacon; he joined the Training Band to play for the Torch. After the performances, he took the baton away for the next band in the relay.

The project provides a unique opportunity for brass band musicians, and conductors, of all ages and abilities, to link up and participate in a huge relay race involving 5 conductor’s batons and a unique new music commission from Paul Lovatt-Cooper entitled “Going The Distance”.

Brass The Baton is being produced by the British Federation of Brass Bands and was awarded the London 2012 Inspire Mark last year in recognition of an exceptional and innovative project inspired by the 2012 Games.

Seb Coe, Chair of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games said: Brass The Baton is encouraging all Brass Bands to fulfil their potential. I am proud that with the help of partners such as the British Federation of Brass Bandswe are delivering our vision to use the power of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games to boost participation in Brass Band music making throughout the country.’

With over 150 brass bands / ensembles and over 7,000 brass band musicians set to take part in Brass The Baton this summer the Holbeach Town Band will be “Going The Distance” for the Black Baton Relay when they play for the lighting of the Jubilee beacon on 4th June;  the Holbeach Victoria Training Band will play for the Olympic Torch relay when it passes through Holbeach on 4th July.
